This publication contains estimates of the number of courses started and percentages of schools participating in the National Tutoring Programme. The data covers England only.  

The National Tutoring Programme (NTP) is a scheme that provides support for pupils and students most affected by disruption to their education as a result of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. In the 2020 to 2021 academic year, NTP delivered support to schools via two routes: tuition partners and academic mentors. In the 2021 to 2022 academic year, funding has also been provided directly to schools for school led tutoring, in addition to the other two options. 

This publication provides: 

• national, regional and local authority level estimates of the total number of starts made by pupils on NTP courses, as well as breakdowns of starts made by pupils on courses through the different options: school led tutoring, tuition partners and academic mentors, and 
• national, regional and local authority level estimates of the percentages of schools participating in the National Tutoring Programme and each route. 

Uncertainty in School Led Tutoring Estimates 

Estimates regarding school led tutoring in the publication are based on the Educational Setting Status Form, a survey with a response rate of  31.1%. Because we infer from this sample what non-responding schools are doing, estimates are uncertain and should be treated with caution. This is particularly true for local authority level estimates where sample sizes are small, but we are continuing to publish these estimates to help inform delivery at a local level. More information can be found in the methodology and flags for small samples and lower response rates are included in the data files. 

The Department for Education (DfE) is also collecting data about school led tutoring through the School Census and the 'School-Led Tutoring: Year-End Statement’ through the Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA). The DfE will use this data to improve and expand NTP statistics in the future.

These statistics are experimental statistics undergoing evaluation. They have been developed under the guidance of the Head of Profession for Statistics and published to involve users and stakeholders at an early stage in assessing their suitability and quality. 

Experimental official statistics have been produced as far as possible in line with the Code of Practice for Statistics. 

Future National Tutoring Programme Statistics

We plan to provide final statistics for NTP 2021 to 2022 academic year by the end of 2022, and details of our plans for releasing data covering NTP in the 2022 to 2023 academic year, in due course.

Starts Made by Pupils on NTP Courses since November 2020

Up to 26th June 2022, DfE estimates that at least 2,092,663 course starts have been made by pupils in England on courses provided through the National Tutoring Programme since the programme was launched in November 2020. This is across the 2020 to 2021 academic year and the 2021 to 2022 academic year.  

This is an estimated increase of 584,614 from 8th May 2022. 

This figure is for course starts.  Pupils may undertake more than one course.

Starts Made by Pupils on NTP Courses in the 2021 to 2022 Academic Year

Up to 6th June 2022, DfE estimates that at least 1,781,946 course starts have been made by pupils in England on courses provided through the National Tutoring Programme in the 2021 to 2022 academic year. 

This is an estimated increase of 584,614 from 8th May 2022. 

This figure is for course starts.  Pupils may undertake more than one course. 

Estimates of NTP course starts made by pupils in each region and local authority are given in the tables below. Please note estimates for school led tutoring are uncertain and refer to the data tables for information about the sample these estimates are based on if you are using this data. 

School Participation in NTP in the 2021 to 2022 Academic Year

In the 2021 to 2022 academic year, an estimated 80.4% of schools have participated in the National Tutoring Programme. This is based on data on school led tutoring from 23rd June 2022 and data on tuition partners and academic mentors up to 26th June 2022. 

This is an estimated increase of 13.6 percentage points from 8th May 2022. 

Some schools are participating in multiple routes of the programme, hence the percentages for the three individual strands sum to greater than the overall percentage.
