Description

This document describes the data included in the ‘Admissions appeals in England: 2025’ National Statistics release’s underlying data files. This data is released under the terms of the Open Government License (opens in new tab) and is intended to meet at least three stars for Open Data (opens in new tab).

The methodology document for this subject should be referenced alongside this release. It provides information on the data sources, their coverage and quality and how the data is produced.

A guide for the 2025 data collection can be found at School admission appeals data collection: how to submit data - GOV.UK (opens in new tab)

Coverage

The data includes returns via the APAD collection from 152 local authorities (for voluntary controlled and community schools) and direct returns from voluntary aided, foundation and academy schools. The City of London local authority has only one school which is voluntary aided so is not required to make an APAD return.

The rate of appeals lodged and heard are calculated using a total number of new admissions estimated from the January school census.
