Description
This document describes the data included in the ‘Schools admissions appeals in England: 2023 to 2024’ National Statistics release’s underlying data files. This data is released under the terms of the Open Government License (opens in new tab) and is intended to meet at least three stars for Open Data (opens in new tab).
The methodology document for this subject should be referenced alongside this release. It provides information on the data sources, their coverage and quality and how the data is produced.

Coverage
The data includes returns via the APAD collection from 152 local authorities (for voluntary controlled and community schools) and direct returns from voluntary aided, foundation and academy schools. The City of London local authority has only one school which is voluntary aided so are not required to make an APAD return.
The rate of appeals lodged and heard are calculated using a total number of new admissions based on the January school census.
Rounding and suppression
No rounding or suppression has been applied to either the appeals or admissions data.
