Volumes are rounded to the nearest 10 and 'low' indicates a base value of fewer than 5. Where data shows 'x' this indicates data is unavailable, 'z' indicates data is not applicable, and 'c' indicates data is suppressed.
Percentages are rounded to one decimal place and calculated on unrounded volumes. 'low' indicates a percentage below 0.5%. Where data shows 'x' this indicates data is unavailable, 'z' indicates data is not applicable, and 'c' indicates data is suppressed.
Learner characteristics (such as sex, learners with learning difficulties and/or disabilities and ethnicity) are based upon self-declaration by the learner.
Ethnicity categories have been aligned with the ethnicities recorded in the 2011 UK Census.
Achievement rates are based on the individual apprenticeship programmes that were completed in the relevant year (Hybrid End Year). They are calculated as the number of programme aims achieved divided by the number started, excluding the programme aims of any learners that transferred onto another qualification within the same institution.
Achievement rates are calculated according to the Apprenticeship Qualification Achievement Rate business rules. These documents are available on the gov.uk website: https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/qualification-achievement-rates-and-minimum-standards
Figures include all funded and unfunded apprenticeship programmes reported on the Individualised Learner Record (ILR).
Further guidance for the Apprenticeships National Achievement Rate Tables can be found on the gov.uk website: https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/sfa-national-success-rates-tables
Pass rates are based on the individual aims that were successfully completed in the relevant year (the Hybrid End Year). They are calculated as the number of learning aims achieved divided by the number successfully completed.
Retention rates are based on the individual aims that were successfully completed in the relevant year (the Hybrid End Year). They are calculated as the number of learning aims completed divided by the number of leavers.
The overall achievement rate is based on the Hybrid End Year. The Hybrid End Year is the later of the Achievement Year, Expected End Year, Actual End Year or Reporting Year of a programme.
For Apprenticeships, age is calculated based on age at start of the programme rather than based on 31 August. The following age bands have been used in this report: 16-18, 19-23, 24+.

Adverts are vacancy notices and will include at least one apprenticeship vacancy with an employer (one advert could potentially include a large number of individual vacancies).
The number of vacancies does not provide a true measure of vacancies for apprenticeships because many are not advertised through the Find An Apprenticeship website, therefore the measure represents a subset of the total number available across the marketplace as a whole.
The number of vacancies could include some over-counting as it may be possible for a vacancy to have previously been advertised and some vacancies can be extended.
Level is as declared by the user placing the advert and does not necessarily align with the definition of level we publish elsewhere. Higher apprenticeships here include those declared as 'Higher' and 'Degree' in the advert. Degree apprenticeships here are those higher apprenticeships at level 6 or 7 apprenticeships declared as "Degree". Elsewhere we define a degree apprenticeships as a level 6 or 7 apprenticeship with a mandatory degree component that is required for successful achievement of the apprenticeship.
There are around 100 adverts since August 2018, for which the number of vacancies in each are currently unavailable. These vacancies therefore are not counted within the vacancy volumes shown here, however, the corresponding adverts are counted in the advert totals.
The number of adverts does not provide a true measure of adverts for apprenticeships because many are not advertised through the Find An Apprenticeship website, therefore the measure represents a subset of the total number available across the marketplace as a whole.
The 2023/24 academic year currently contains three months of data.

Commitments may be recorded on the Apprenticeship Service system after the training start date has passed and therefore data should be treated as highly provisional.
The levy-status of a commitment is based on the latest known status of the corresponding apprenticeship service account. This means that historical commitments may change their levy status if the apprenticeship service account was to subsequently change their status.
Fully agreed commitments include commitments for which funding payments are complete, along with those that are actively being funded.
On 9 January 2020 the Apprenticeship service was extended to all employers that do not pay the levy to register and reserve funds. Prior to January 2020 it was only possible for non-levy organisations to set up apprenticeship service accounts and have commitments in order to utilise levy transfers, whilst a limited number of non-levy organisations registered accounts as part of testing in preparation for the extension of the service to all employers.
From 01 April 2021, all non-levy paying organisations are using the apprenticeship service. Prior to this date some starts with non-levy employers were not funded through the apprenticeship service and so the data reported here only provides a partial picture.

Staff in schools maintained by a Local Authority are included within the 'All Local Government' totals. Employers can record information about redundancies at a later date on the Apprenticeship service (AS), therefore the information can suffer from ‘data lag’ with information being recorded weeks or months after the redundancy actually happened. Figures for the most recent months will therefore likely be underreported.
This data does not capture all apprenticeships, as prior to 01 April 2021 not all non-levy employers were using the Apprenticeship Service (AS). From 01 April 2021 all new starts are reported and managed through the AS.

Level 6 plus represents degree-level apprenticeships (apprenticeships at level 6 and level 7). Degree level apprenticeships may or may not have a mandatory degree component.
Mandatory degree refers to apprenticeship standards on the 'Search the Apprenticeship Standards' website with a status of ‘Integrated' or ‘Non-Integrated' Degree, plus any frameworks where degrees are mandatory for completion.
Some apprentices may be on an apprenticeship that doesn’t mandate a degree, but where the apprentice may achieve a degree as part of their employer’s particular apprenticeship programme.
Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subjects include those in the Construction, Planning and the Built Environment, Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies, Information and Communication Technology, and Science and Mathematics sector subject areas.
There are a small number of starts on frameworks that have been reported in 2021/22 and 2022/23. All remaining apprenticeship frameworks were withdrawn to new learners on 31 July 2020. Learners who started on frameworks are where it has been agreed a learner can return to a previous framework they have been on after an extensive break.
