Footnotes
- A child in need is defined under the Children Act 1989 as a child who is unlikely to reach or maintain a satisfactory level of health or development, or their health or development will be significantly impaired without the provision of children's social care services, or the child is disabled.
- Figures for children in need at 31 March include children awaiting assessment and those that do not require an assessment. These children are included to give a full account of the children in need population and are not intended to be used as a measure of local authority performance.
- A child can have more than one episode of need throughout the year, but episodes should not overlap.
- Rates per 10,000 of the population of children aged under 18 years are calculated using Office for National Statistics (ONS) mid-year population estimates for children aged 0 to 17 years in England.
