Footnotes

  1. These figures should be interpreted with care. Teacher pay in England varies by location, with four main pay regions: Inner London, Outer London, the London Fringe and the rest of England. Salaries are higher in London pay regions to reflect the higher cost of living. A higher proportion of teachers from ethnic minority backgrounds work in London compared to White British teachers. This means that overall averages may suggest that these teachers are paid more than White British teachers, but this reflects differences in where teachers work rather than differences in pay for comparable roles. Further information on teacher pay scales is available here: School teachers' pay and conditions - GOV.UK. (opens in new tab)
  2. There are differences by sex in the grades of teachers; female teachers are less likely than their male counterparts to be in leadership positions. Therefore care should be taken to consider teacher grade and school phase when comparing differences by sex in average pay. For more information on differences in teacher pay by teacher characteristics see Teacher Pay and Progression: Differences by Teacher Characteristics (opens in new tab) (opens in new tab).
