  2. The 'Maintained nursery and state-funded primary schools' category is a combination of the 'State-funded primary schools' and 'Maintained nursery schools' sub-groups.
  3. Where provider type refers to nursery or infant classes, this is the type of class the child was present in on census day, which is distinct from their national curriculum year group.
  4. Data collected in 2021 (and to a lesser extent 2022) was affected by the impact of COVID-19 uncertainty on providers and parents. Further information is available in the methodology note.
