  5. Business Studies: includes economics from 2019/20
  6. The Teacher Workforce Model (TWM) is used by DfE to set postgraduate ITT targets https://explore-education-statistics.service.gov.uk/find-statistics/postgraduate-initial-teacher-training-targets/2025-26.
  7. Data was extracted on 10 November 2025
  8. Subject: The subject given here is ITT subject and may not be the same as the subject of the undergraduate degree held.
  9. Figures for 2025/26 are provisional and are subject to change. Figures for 2024/25 and all previous years have been revised.
  10. Troops to Teachers are excluded from all figures prior to 2021/22.
  11. Data from 2021/22 does not contain forecast trainees, this is due to a change in data collection methodology.
  12. Modern Foreign Languages: here includes classics.
  13. Other subject: here includes a different mix of subjects to the main targets by subject table, this is for consistency with historic teacher supply model groupings; Other includes Drama from 2014/15 and Citizenship from 2015/16.
  14. Undergraduate: The majority of undergraduate provision is offered by higher education institutions.
  15. Proportions exclude trainees where information was not supplied, or where characteristics/information were reported as ‘unknown’.
  16. Primary: Prior to 2018/19, a small number of Primary trainees on subject specialist courses were reported against their subject specialism and were included in Total Secondary. From 2018/19, they are reported as Primary.
  17. Inclusion status refers to self-funded trainees, who were excluded from numbers of trainees and recruitment targets prior to 2025/26. For academic years 2019/20 to 2024/25 these trainees are presented as "Previously excluded". For academic year 2025/26 onwards these trainees are included in targets and "Original" numbers.  Percentage of ITT recruitment target refers to "Original" postgraduates in every case. Due to a change in data source, numbers of self-funded trainees were not available prior to 2019/20 and care must be taken with comparisons. For more detail see methodology section.
